This is what you should be doing.

The advice on The art of Writing. Make your writing personal. Create a connection with your reader. Bring value to your reader. Show your vulnerability.

You need to do these to increase your revenue.

I have read lots of articles on medium, Substack, and websites about how to get more. Everyone wants more. More followers, more reads, more revenue, more fame. If you want the algorithm to favour you this is the way to do it.

Short term gain. The next buck. The story that is a re-write of advice the author read. I am not that desperate. And neither should you be.

If you find yourself that desperate, find another line of work. If you have to have another job to pay your bills, you are still a writer.

The Art Of Writing

Back in 2006/2007 I was a desperate man. My desperation was not financial. I was working the hours to support a frugal existence that was good enough for me. What I was desperate for was connection.

My plug has been pulled on society. No longer did I feel I was apart of the grid.

Circumstances had forced me to move to a new town. Although I was with the same employer I was in a new branch. All of these people, my new colleagues and neighbours were strangers to me.

The blessing was my introverted characteristics shielded me against loneliness.

I made those choices. The new town and work place were my choice. The cost of rent and the fuel costs were a factor in the choices. In this ‘free’ society we are allowed to make those decisions.

The disconnection made me think about change. How change is a force of nature in the way wind, rain and tides are. I scribbled about it at the time. Trying to get those thoughts in some sort of order. The art of writing was eluding me.

The way the planet we live on changes slowly. Erosion of wind and rain, the resistance of rock and the pressure that builds when change meets resistance. I may have been too stoned at the time to understand it more than a feeling and certainly to wasted to write about it.

The way the pressure builds before an eruption intrigued me. Humans are formed from the matter of the planet and are we governed by the change force too. The pent up pressure leads to an eruption. I had been happy, satisfied with my life – except a minor lack of financial security – I had everything I could ever want. I did not want that to change.

Boom, in a second it all exploded. Leaving me watching my limbs drifting away on the currents.

I was never able to rationalise change as a force of nature.

We all need to feel connected. To feel apart of this planet.

We all need to feel we have value.

We all want more.

Bad Advice?

There is no formula that gets you more. Do this….do that….be this…….be that…. All may earn you a quick buck, a morsel or two extra for a few months, but in the long term nothing works better than being yourself. You may never make it big, you may never be famous, be able to brag about how your excellence has given you everything.

There is an art of writing.

Yet if you so have those moments, you will know that your life was yours, and that through the delight and pain you remained you.

The butterfly is fame. Big shrinks. That excellence that was once you, that got those likes, those ‘great writing’ comments, those extra followers, will make you think you have lost it when the next post is barely noticed.

Trophies are just simple shining memories.

When you write there is only one person you should seek to satisfy.

Me. Yes, that is right, me. (Or You!)

I am never satisfied. I could always be better.

There is nothing wrong with all those instructions, they may give you ideas. But the best advice you can have is ‘be forever you’. And just write what is interesting to you. You alone.

Find your own Art of Writing. Write what you want. When you want. And about what You want. If you write a winner, be happy. It may only be fleeting but it is a wonderous experience.

Life is about connection. On a planet of billions, there are only two – you and me.
